BEYONCÉ & BEPS CLOSE FIRST F1 ROCKS - SATURDAY NIGHT

27th September 2009

With the likes of F1 stars David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen propping up the VIP bar at F1 Rocks and Beyoncé and making a beeline for the F1 paddock, music and motorsport have truly come together this week through F1 Rocks™ Singapore with LG.

Marking the closing night of this brand new run of spectacular shows, Saturday night’s stellar line-up saw the fastest take-up for tickets, with the late night show selling out long in advance.

Opening the long evening’s entertainment was Melbourne based record spinner DJ Havana Brown, whose high-energy electro set warmed up the capacity crowd as the skies darkened and the excitement grew.

So as not to clash with the grand prix qualifying, taking place just down the road at the Marina Bay Circuit, The Black Eyed Peas played an early hit packed set. Undertaken with a new found confidence, invariably owing to their record breaking run at the top of the US charts, the BEPS’ live set and production were pushed to a new level. Fergie confirmed her worth as one of the best belting voices in Divaland, while Will.i.am’s charismatic swagger filled the cavernous stage alongside two towering robots. ‘Boom Boom Pow’ and ‘Where is the Love’ received the biggest reactions of the night, although a country & western reworking of ‘Pump It’ proved that a band this tight, and on top of its game, can still have a sense of humour.

Revered British DJ Seb Fontaine played a crowd pleasing set to what was by then the biggest audience ever at an event in Fort Canning Park. Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ went down a storm but the biggest display of hands in the air was reserved for Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.

Fellow Brit Killa Kela also showed up on the main stage between the big hitting artists to give the crowd a taste of his unique beatbox style, which he later demonstrated in full effect with a blisteringly loud headline slot on the Red Bull Stage.

At around midnight, two huge Mercedes limousines pulled slowly into the backstage village, heralding the arrival of the night’s headline superstar act – and, within literally minutes, Beyoncé Knowles was up on the Fort Canning stage, facing her fanatical fan base in a sequined leotard and house-high heels, and shredding her way through ‘Crazy in Love’. Opening her set with perhaps her most well known track was a daring call to arms, but the 28 year old diva more than matched its impact with a later Destiny’s Child medley and a surprisingly soulful cover of Alanis Morrisette’s ‘You Ought to Know’. Michael Jackson got a second nod of the evening later in the set, with the star changing the words to ‘Halo’ in the late megastar’s honour. “I want to thank Michael for everything he taught me and everyone else,” said the singer who had earlier revealed footage of herself and Kelly Rowland dancing to Jackson’s music, before adding, “Michael, I can see your halo.”

Seventy five minutes later, and after five costume changes, Beyoncé’s stunning set was over – and so was the first ever F1 Rocks™ Singapore with LG. The concerts and those participating helped make the Singapore night race the most rock n roll Grand Prix ever staged. Keep checking back to f1rocks.com to see where we’re going to be next.
